Captain Ryan is given top prize

MALVERN Rugby Club's skipper Ryan Watkins was crowned player of the year after leading his side to promotion.

Director of rugby David Robins paid tribute to the young centre, who missed only one match of the league and cup campaign through injury.

Stewart Clarke won the Bowman and Acock Cup after being named most improved player of the campaign.

Ted Lang was named the outstanding youngster, scooping the President's Cup. Sam Jones was named the second XV's player of the season with Ian Hill crowned the third XV's player of the year.

Debs Danby was named Malvern Angels player of the year.

Robins paid tribute to the whole squad of 48 players who had made first XV appearances: "We lost several of our young emerging players to gap year travels, then had a tremendous injury list to cope with. "Although our form after Christmas was affected by these factors, Ryan and the coaches kept the team on track to take the top promotion spot on the final day of the league season."

Long-serving prop Steve Cooper received the lifetime achievement award.
