Malvern punk band find themselves stars in the States
THE Tights, Malvern's own legendary punk band, have found fame on the other side of the Atlantic with a new generation of teenage fans.
The band, which formed as teenagers themselves at the height of the Punk era, enjoyed a couple of years of success in the late seventies but split in 1979.
Now, more than 25 years later, the, now middle-aged, punks are one of the hottest bands on the US skateboarding scene.
Having reformed "for a laugh" in 2004 the four-man band were oblivious, until recently, that one of their old tracks, Cracked, released in 1978, had been used in a skateboarding film called Beautiful Breakdown.
"The star of the film, celebrity street skater Corey Duffel, chose our song because we were his favourite band," explained Gary Marsden, the band's bass and keyboard player.
The next thing the band knew they were being inundated with emails from American teenagers begging them to release an album and visit the States.
Then an American skate and surf clothing manufacturer, Split usa, offered them a sponsorship deal.
In the seventies the teenage punks had released two singles with Malvern-based Cherry Red records. The first, Bad Hearts, was played by John Peel and went to number 6 in the indie charts. They played gigs at Malvern's Winter Gardens and at pubs and clubs around Worcestershire before moving to London.
The band are currently recording an album for their old label Cherry Red, at GLOW Studios in Colwall which should be available this summer.
And the band are heading for LA in August to play their first ever US concert dates. If you want to hear The Tights - Gary Marsden(bass), Malcolm Orgee(vocals), Robin Banks(guitar) and Robert Hodges(Drummer) - they will be playing their first indoor show in Malvern in 30 years at The Lamb, West Malvern, on Friday, May 9.

Smelly old tights, skateboarding, punk, old men? Surely the world has move on since those days! It just reinforces my thoughts on the American nation as a whole. Helen B

I wish them luck but I hope when they having group sex, snorting drugs and throwing tv set out of the Hyatt Hotel on Sunset in L.A. they pause for a moment and remind them selves that not only are they ambassadors, for
England but also for Worcestershire. I would be more than a little embarrassed to find a member of this band getting caught, as the actor Hugh Grant did, with a two bob whore on the streets of hollywood. Castro on the above comment also points out, and quite rightly so, that these are not young men, such as Boyz Zone are and they will find that life touring such a large expansive country hard. Nobody will be cheering if they cant come up with the goods due to too much Bud Lite and not enough sleep due to the attention of the local groupies.

I don't that being fat or old age is a problem these day in Rock N Roll. I know these guys are tired a bit frazzled around the edge. they may be pushing 50 but look at the Rolling Stones. they are 86 years old and still packing the crowds in to see them. The same with Paul McCartney. Will he ever stop boring us? It doesnt look like it.
Anyway its nice to see they have finally made it after 30 years on the road. Now that they are properly on the way to stardom one has to think of the original drummer who isn't playing with them any more. Will he get a slice of the big $$$$’s.
When they are hanging around the clubs of downtown NYC to the early hours, quaffing the finest champagnes and using a dwarfs head as a mirror to sniff from, will they give a dam about this guy. Probably not. That's show biz, a ruthless back stabbing business to be in. They should be ashamed, grow up and get a proper job.
