Fears for pig industry
LIB Dem parliamentary candidate Richard Burt visited Lawn Farm in Welland to highlight concerns about the plight of the pig farming industry.
Due to feed costs doubling in the past eighteen months, farmers are losing an average of £26 per pig, forcing many into financial difficulty and pushing some out of pig farming all together.
Farmer Roger Cousins said: "The British pig industry is on the verge of vanishing. Feed prices have doubled and farmers are losing money for every pig that is raised.
"Consumers both in Worcestershire and across the country have said that they are happy to pay more for their pork, but if the farmers don't get a fair price for their pigs many will struggle to carry on in business at all.
Richard Burt said: "I have great sympathy with hard pressed pig farmers and will do all I can to highlight the plight of the industry and to encourage local supermarkets and abattoirs to give our farmers a fair price for our pork."

People are going vegetarian or at least sticking to white meat these days because of health concerns.
Even devout carnivores are saying they don't eat so much red meat now.
The latest thing is the carbon footprint of livestock, pretty high by all accounts.
I guess it is one of those things and farmers will have to grow other crops or keep different livestock.

May it be suggested to pig farmers that supplying local pubs with quality pork scratchings may help to bring in a little extra cash. After a few pints of ale most peolpe can't resist these highly fattening lumps of deep fried fat and its hard to find good ones these days. The best ones still have a few pig hairs on them.
Is also possible to have a KFC in Malvern?

Are you joking Steve? I love my pork and don't want to see it become extinct. Gordon Ramsey had some in his garden, maybe we could all do that? If had two pigs each at least, this would stop the shortage of pig meat & scratchings! I love all meat! Helen B

I am a devout carnivore and Im actually increasing my red meat intake because it is absolutely delicious.
But on the subject of pork- It will be a sad day you can’t find your plate full of smoked ribs, pork chops, a ham, pork pies (yum), Pork rind, hot-dogs, slow cooked trotters, pig chin, pigs liver and many more scrumptious meals the humble grunter can give us.
Lets not forget bacon. The smell of it cooking has turned the most militant hardcore loudmouthed preaching veggie vegan in to a raging reborn carnivore, licking their plate and begging for more.
Bacon can make the most un-amusing salad taste glorious. A bacon and avocado roll is the perfect lunch time snack.
A sad day will be had by all when at a fair, fate or festival, you cant find the pinky snozzle nosed oink on a spit slowly rotating and bathing in its own juices, ready to be carved and put in a bun with some delicious apple source and stuffing.
I will weep at the demise of the wonderful hog.
