Record numbers at Malvern event

MALVERN College hosted a record number of schools at the 16th Annual National Preparato-ry Schools' Cross Country Cha-mpionship.

More than 890 runners from 47 schools took part in the event, which saw the reintroduction of the Small Schools' Trophy for the highest placed small school in each race.

Acting Head Sarah Welch said: "Malvern College was proud to host such an inspiring event and welcome so many schools to our grounds for the eighth time.

"It was great to see so much support for the runners, who performed extremely well around a difficult hilly course.

"We look forward to welcoming as many schools next year, when we will be well on our way to having world-class sports facilities as part of our extensive development of the College's facilities."

In the under 11s girls' race Charlotte Underwood from Spratton Hall set the standard for others by leading in the first race in a time of seven minutes 51 seconds, 10 seconds ahead of her closest challenger, Natasha Seaton from Thomas' Battersea.

Emily Spencer from Stockport Grammar followed closely in third place in a time of 8.02 with Danes Hill claiming the team event ahead of Spratton Hall and Moor Park.

Will Roud from Dulwich College Prep School won the under 11s boys race finishing in 9:13 - a minute faster than his time last year.

Spratton Hall's Nathan Groves finished second in 9:35, while James Ford came home next 11 seconds later.

The team event saw last year's winners St Piran's Prep just beaten into second place by the winners Spratton Hall.

Rose Hill, Tunbridge Wells and Dulwich College were both placed third.

Bromsgrove's Rebecca Straw romped home in the under 13s girls event in a time of 9:51.

Straw's nearest challenger was Danielle Morgan, who was 14 seconds behind.

Lilly Owsley took third place in 10:14 with the team event being claimed by Bromsgrove.

Spratton Hall finished second with Clifton College and Danes Hill tying for third.

Eagle House School's Thomas Johnson flew home in the under 13s race in 13:07 - 18 seconds ahead of the pack.

Sam Bedford from Millfield Prep was runner-up with Thomas' Battersea's Casper Dickinson pipping his twin brother Joshua to third place.

Millfield eased their way to victory in the team event with Cheam School and Spratton Hall finishing second and third respectively.
