Youngsters shine despite showers

A YOUNG group of soccer superstars did not let the wet weather put them off as they starred in a day of cup final action in Malvern.

The Mercian Festival Junior League saw boys and girls playing from under 12 up to under 16 in action, providing excellent entertainment for the watching crowds.

In the Mercian League Shield, Evesham United Girls under-13s side ran out winners, beating Stourport Royals Girls 6-0.

Newtown Sports Juniors were the winners in the under-13s Trophy World Cup, defeating Evesham United Juniors 1-0.

A seven-goal thriller between Newtown Sports Colts and Evesham United Juniors followed with the Colts winning after extra-time.

Newtown managed to find that little bit extra in extra-time and despite some close shaves at either end, they held on to win the Wayne Phillpotts Memorial Shield.

AFC Malvern took the spoils in the under-15s Andy Wardroper Memorial Trophy, beating Droitwich Spa Boys 4-0.

Droitwich Spa's Steve Keay was made man-of- the-match for his tireless efforts despite his side's defeat.

Suffolk Rangers under- 16s romped to victory in the Reg Box Cup, with a fine 5-1 victory over Ferndale Flyers.

But the wet weather did not put off the young superstars who performed in very testing conditions at the Langland Stadium last Sunday.
